Open Cloud Mesh: sharing files across clouds
a test collaboration on SURF Research Cloud
Open Cloud Mesh (OCM) is an open protocol for sharing files between independent storage services, the way email works between providers. Here, Nextcloud and OpenCloud instances form a trusted federation: they share one list of member servers, each server only exchanges shares with the servers it trusts, and every member trusts the others.
Sharing starts with an invitation. A user creates one (Nextcloud: Contacts, “External invitations”; OpenCloud: the “ScienceMesh” app) and passes the link or code to a colleague on the other server. Accepting it exchanges both users’ cloud IDs; from then on they share folders and files with each other from their usual interface, while the data stays on the owner’s server.
- Single sign-on with your institution's identity, via SRAM
- Independent servers, Nextcloud and OpenCloud, one federation
- Invite first, then share in both directions; only between trusted servers
- Open standard and open source: the setup is public on code.geant.dev
A test environment: OCM between Nextcloud and OpenCloud is still being worked on.
